Speechless

Jane Johnson, a fabulous photographer and great friend, posted the following on her blog the other day. Rather than try and reiterate her comments, I think Jane says it best:
_________________________________
Jun05 Miss Emily: Bend Newborn Photographer
This spring has been extremely busy with an influx of newborn supermodels demanding some well deserved attention! And I have to admit–I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every second of each of these newborns! The standard, desirable newborn portrait seems to be the iconic peaceful, happily sleeping baby. However, the reality of getting these little ones to that place is a little more work than you might think. They’re used to living the pampered life, always wrapped up snugly in the cutest and softest blanket available, with a loved one cooing in their ear. But when I come over, the clothes come off, and they get more action than they’ve yet experienced. This makes for a very awake baby, and astounded parents at just how resistant their little one is to sleep that is normally never far away.

All that to say, that’s my favorite part. When you hire me as your newborn photographer, I not only work to get your baby comfortable and relaxed enough to sleep in some crazy positions, I’m typically shooting as you work to get them there as well. These aren’t just a few photos of your baby sleeping. These are lifestyle portraits: the family interacting, the nursery, the siblings, the dog, the chaos of your life in that wonderful, fleeting moment.
These sessions typically take no less than two hours. Usually longer. And the beauty of it is that we’re on their schedule. As hard as they fight, they eventually give in to sleep. And you are left with a wide gamut of photos to choose from displaying your baby’s personality even in the first few days of life.

And if you throw in a fantastic chair with a lot of history… you have me wrapped right around your little finger! And that’s exactly what happened with three day old Miss Emily. When I arrived at her house, I was thrilled to find the most beautiful chaise lounge in the master bedroom. But it wasn’t just any chaise lounge. Every thread on this chair could probably tell you a different story–especially the ones hanging on for dear life. When Emily’s great-Grandfather moved into his first house with his bride, he purchased this chair as a house warming gift. From the day it was delivered to their house, he sat on the edge of this chair every single morning to put his shoes on. I can only imagine the stories this chair has to tell! And I couldn’t wait to get Emily on there for a somewhat modern twist on the generational portrait. I loved every second of my time with Emily, even down to the tiny shoes already adorning the shelves in her pre-diva closet. I can already tell we will be best friends. And I know she loved being in the spotlight. Even if at the very end she decided she’d had enough of me in her face. David and Amanda: Congratulations on such a beautiful little girl! I’m already in love with your little peanut and can’t wait to watch her grow up!

Shameless

I am relishing these days at home with Emily. It's amazing to sit and watch her, even when she's sleeping. I wonder what she'll be like, how her personality will develop, what hobbies she'll take on, etc. Now that my camera is physically attached to my arm like one of 'those people' at Disneyland with the bright orange fanny pack, I have found myself making a few guesses to answer those questions...

Like father like...daughter?

She'll always say 'ok' to her mommy.

She'll be a daddy's girl. Who am I kidding...she already is!

...Or maybe a mommy's girl.

A volleyball player? [Whack]

She'll always tell the truth. -Or give us the "I didn't do it" look...

She'll be the perfect teen...all the midnight parties are happening now!

She'll have great style.

Best of all, she'll be happy.

PPP

Travis & Kelly (aka 'The Godfather' & 'Fairy God Mother') competed in the grueling annual Pole Pedal Paddle in Bend yesterday and did awesome! Emily and our friends Cassie & Gunnar's baby Reilly had their cheerleading debut. (David wishes I'd use "support staff" vs. "cheerleader" but we all know he's just in denial.)

And Baby Makes Three

David and I can hardly control our emotions today, we feel so overwhelmed by the birth of our little Emily at 10 this morning. 6 lbs 15 oz of the most beautiful site I've ever seen, and she is all ours. I may be able to put it in to words some day, but just not today. I can't think of the words to describe what we're feeling, and those that come to mind seem far too trivial. So for now, here are her first photos.

This is Kelly, our fairy-god-mother. Isn't she a natural with our little angel?

What a Day

Wow! Today has been an interesting day. I (David) woke up with this feeling like something was going to happen today. Needless to say I didn't not expect the doctor to say lets go have a baby while we were at our weekly check up, I was expecting her to say I will see you at the hospital on Friday. But alas, we are here and it is now 4:08 in the am and Amanda is at a 6 with the pitocin cranked up.

We have been at the hospital since a little after 1pm on the 5th. I will say Amanda is a trooper and doing well. Just a quick rundown of the afternoon. Admitted at 1pm, induced at 3pm, water was acciddently broke at 8 during an exam...I have a feeling it was ready to go. Thats when the fun really began. She was a real trooper and made it 2 hours before calling for the good stuff that has allowed her to sleep some tonight. And that brings us to now...4:13 and waiting. We will have pics sometime tomorrow after little Emily arrives.

Good night.

What a Guy

I just wanted to take a moment [pre-baby craziness] to give props to my husband. He is not only an amazing man of God and leader of our family, but such a wonderful support to me. He has spent so much of his spare time lately trying to keep me from losing my mind - from suggesting the hike, to taking me to dinner, and lots of cribbage in the evenings! He rubs my back or my shoulder when they're aching and hasn't once complained.

So God please bless this man - what a guy!

Old Wives Tales

I have come to the realization that they don't work. Shocking, I know. Short of stomaching castor oil, I convinced myself last week that it would be a good idea to try out the top 3...just in case. (a) Physical activity: Saturday 5K, Sunday hike to Benham Falls. (b) Mexican food. (c) Married people things. I can officially report that I am still pregnant! The good news is that it was good for me to be on a mission to pass the time, and the weather was absolutely beautiful last weekend. Check out the photos from Benham Falls - I don't think the dogs minded my little experiment at all.

All Systems Are Go

I had my weekly OB appointment this afternoon, and great news...progress! My body seems to have realized there's a baby in there and is moving toward delivery. I'm dilated 1cm and 25% effaced, right on schedule according to the Dr. Considering I hadn't progressed at all 2 weeks ago, we were all very relieved. My Dr. is still planning on having an ultrasound next Friday if I haven't started labor, but she was far more optimistic today about not having to induce.

Wahoo!

Whew

I had my weekly OB appointment on Tuesday, and THANK you Lord, my Doctor moved up my due date. It has been a quiet struggle between she and I the last several months. I know exactly when we got pregnant, and I just have had this feeling she was a week behind. All the measurements on my ultrasounds were measuring a week ahead. FINALLY, on her own (I'm learning patience) she measured me, looked at my chart and past ultrasounds, and served up the silver platter: an April 24 date.

Here's the scoop: if I haven't entered 'spontaneous labor' (sounds dangerously close to 'spontaneous combustion'...but I'm not going there) by my appointment on April 23, she's going to order an ultrasound to check the size of the baby. Because my pelvis is so small and the baby is measuring ahead of schedule (that's our little over-achiever!), she wants to give me a shot at a regular birth (vs. c-section). Based on that ultrasound (a.k.a. unless the baby has shrunk somehow) she'll induce labor.

I'm not a huge fan of being induced, but I also really want to try and have this baby naturally (and by naturally, I mean without surgery...drugs are still on the list!).
